When a couple of the most significant artists in hip-hop – Jay-Z and Kanye West — team up on an recording, could there really be any way it can exist up to the media hype? Likely not, and that is the load “Watch the Throne” (Roc-A-Fella Records/Roc Nation/Def Jam Recordings) deals with.
That’s a great number of theatre for so early on, like running a movie amid a chase scene, particularly if compared with performer Frank Ocean, whose soft, emotional tenor charms on the dynamics of faith and unsound hierarchies. “No church in the wild,” he performs, with it the listener goes into a bejeweled realm, one full of musings on the spoils of wealth and the chaos that is connected with it. This strain between worshiping the spirit and honoring the bounty drives “Watch the Throne.”
The long-gestating challenge, launched purely on iTunes Monday morning at 12:01 a.m., combines the positives of two of probably the most well known rappers in the last two years, Jay-Z and West, who definitely have performed collectively often but never ever on a collaborative full-length lp, and couples them with some of today’s esteemed producers, including the RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, DJ Premier, the Neptunes, the Jugganauts, Swizz Beats and Q-Tip
That isn’t to cover it’s an understandable classic – one listen isn’t enough to determine that – but it is impressive. Both rappers appear hungry, if controlled, like they’re giving each other room. Kanye keeps looking for new angles, each of those lyrically and in rhyming cadence, although Jay-Z seems more like he’s taking aim, firing and impacting. When it was over, Jay-Z got stated which the album took 9 months and three attempts to develop. One was finished and, obviously, amazingly bombastic but not particularly listenable. Good to them for being shrewd plenty of to know the difference.
