West twists a few seconds of Redding’s “Try a tad Tenderness” into a Blueprint-style barrage, laying down the stage for some serious slick collar-popping from (“Photo shoot fresh, looking like wealth / I’m about to call the paparazzi on myself”). Jay’s action, in turn, inspires Ye to step up his wordplay (“Luxury rap, the Hermes of verses / Sophisticated lack of knowledge, write my curses in cursive”); the younger star sounds like he pulled an all-nighter trying to outdo his mentor’s rhymes. They keep trading punchlines for three minutes, opting not to interrupt the fun with anything resembling a chorus. When the verses are undoubtedly packed with this much wit and style, who needs one? Is it because of this rap alliance? A close listen to West and betrays two often imitated but distinctly different styles. Jay rhyming with a maturity and mastery that conjures up images of Michael Jordan as he collected his last three rings. Unblockable jump shot. The sharp voice, the solid flow that lacks the insecurities that many freshmen rappers poorly hide.

To be fair, I’ll point out the good in the track. There were a few fascinating lines from Kanye West like “sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive.” Aside from that, I didn’t see this as anything more than just a studio “outtake.” But in distinction to the dreck that passes for rap now and that cover of “Try a touch Tenderness” by Chris Brown I can see how this can be considered re-invigorating.

The second problem I have is the subject matter of the song. It’s swagger rap, talking about how rich they might be and what possessions they have. If this song is a tribute to Otis Redding, using his most famous song, what they’re debating doesn’t seem fitting. This is a different depth than so much of the sounds that is coming out today. Kanye has gotten there. Jay has gotten there. They’re not there all the time, but they have that soulful gear in them. Chuck D, Queen Latifah, and Pac actually are classic Soul rappers. Young Jeezy, Eminem, or Kweli might be considered to be more contemporary ones. Soul rappers can be MCs in the tradition of Otis Redding, who pour themselves out when recording or performing – not holding anything back for fear of how it will sound or how it will look. Soul rap is real talk. Pure spittin’. Word.
